City of Cape Town Mayor, Patricia De Lille and Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith have been placed on specialleave. They’ve been involved in a public spat regarding security upgrades to De Lille’s private home in Pinelands. The Mayor’s Office has confirmed that De Lille will continue with her mayoral duties. Party spokesperson, Phumzile van Damme, says leader Mmusi Maimane says they are not allowed to participate in DA activities until the party’s Federal Executive investigation is concluded. Van Damme says some time ago, Maimane convened a special sub-committee of the DA’s Federal Executive, in order to investigate the political management and governance of the City of Cape Town, and to report back as to what further action was required.
The sub-committee will be chaired by DA Parliamentary Chief Whip, John Steenhuisen and is scheduled to begin its hearings on Tuesday.
