Today is a big day for South Africa in terms of all this space.
Leanne is coming to you from the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) core site just outside the town of Carnarvon in the Northern Cape.
South Africa’s contribution to the SKA a project called the MeerKAT is complete.
It is a significant milestone, as it will be the world’s largest radio telescope up until such time as the SKA itself is built.
The MeerKAT will be integrated into the phase one of the mid-frequency component of the SKA.
Deputy President David Mabuza will be launching the 64-dish MeerKAT telescope array later this morning.
But for more on this milestone, I’m joined by the Director-General of Science and Technology, Dr Phil Mjwara.
