The Department of Public Safety launched the ‘Women Safety’ campaign in partnership with the University of Johannesburg on Wednesday.
The women safety campaign was launched at the UJ Sophiatown Residence to teach students the basics on self-defense.
The City of Johannesburg’s Micheal Sun said the Johannesburg Metro Police and the city are working together to stop gender-based violence and crimes on campuses.
One student, Nozipho Radebe, said she felt she was ‘trapped in a jail cell’ as she no longer feels safe walking around in public.
The campaign is a response to the soaring numbers and reports of women being killed and hijacked.
