Justice Minister Michael Masutha says he will soon submit to Parliament government’s notice of withdrawal from the Rome Statute and introduce an International Crimes Bill to replace it.
He was speaking on the sidelines of the 16th session of the Assembly of States Parties to Statute in New York, where he reaffirmed Pretoria’s position to withdraw from the International Criminal Court.
The decision followed several court judgments that the government violated the law by not arresting Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir during his visit to South Africa for an African Union summit in June 2016.
