Overall, fisheries and aquaculturesupport the livelihoods of an estimated 540 millionpeople, or eightpercent of the worldpopulation. Aquaculturefarms can provide jobs, food security and if well plannedshould have little or no negativeimpact on oceans ecosystems or othersectors that share the same resource. 15 Aquaculturefarms are situated in around the Saldahna Bay area alone.Mussel and oysterfarming is not new to Saldanha Bay. But the increase in aquaculturedevelopmentzones in the bay as well the introduction of salmon trout farmsclose the Langebaan Lagoon (A MarineProtected Area) has causedserious objections from the Save Langebaan LagoonActionGroup.
