The Democratic Republic of Congo has been hit by two separate outbreaks of polio. That’s according to the World Health Organisation. Outbreaks have been reported in two remote provinces. The news comes less than a week after the W.H.O. announced that polio has broken out in Syria. The organisation says the risk of a further spread of polio in the DRC is high. Four Congolese cases have been reported so far. A lack of access to vaccines is the biggest cause of the outbreak. Polio attacks the nervous system and causes paralysis within hours. It can be fatal. Children are most at risk.
