Last season’s runners-up, Cape Town City will be looking to go one better when they travel to Harry Gwala Stadium to take on Maritzburg United in the last MTN8 quarterfinal on Sunday.

The Citizens fell at the last hurdle against Supersport United in last year’s edition of the competition and will be looking to go all the way this time around and give Benni McCarthy his first bit of silverware as coach.

However, they will be under no illusion that this will be a mean feat as their first assignment in the tournament is at a venue the home team made into somewhat of a fortress last season.

If the display shown by the Team of Choice in their only league outing at home so far this season is anything to go by, Harry Gwala Stadium may not be as impenetrable as it was previously, as the hosts fell to a 2-0 defeat against Golden Arrows in their season opener. This was followed by an away defeat to Free State Stars, signalling that they may be a mere shadow of the side that experienced a dream run last season.

Maritzburg United vs Cape Town City: Head to head

Despite Cape Town City being relatively new in the top flight, these two sides will be more than well acquainted.

Their last encounter ended in a 1-1 draw but was preceded by a six-goal thriller in which Maritzburg United came out tops, winning 4-2 at Princess Magogo Stadium.

Overall, these two sides have met four times, with Maritzburg winning twice, while City have registered just win against Sunday’s opponents.

Kick off: 14:55

TV and live stream: Supersport 4, SABC 1.
