A woeful batting performance by South Africa saw Sri Lanka register a convincing 178-run victory in the 5th ODI in Colombo on Sunday.

The hosts won the toss and elected to bat and posted 299/8 in their 50 overs with captain Angelo Mathews left stranded on a run-a-ball 97 at the end of the innings.

There wasn’t much to report home in the way of the Proteas bowling figures, as Andile Phehlukwayo and Wian Mulder took two wickets apiece, at quite the cost as they both went for over seven runs an over. Keshav Maharaj was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 1/32 in his 10 overs, while Kagiso Rabada had a return of 1/47 in as many overs.

South Africa’s innings started off in disaster, as the experienced Hashim Amla lasted just eight balls without adding to the scoreboard, but his opening partner and skipper, Quinton de Kock gave the visitors a semblance of hope as he made a quickfire 54 off just 57 balls while things collapsed at the other end.

The innings failed to get going as the Proteas were eventually skittled out for 121, with Akila Dananjaya the chief destroyer with career-best figures of 6/29.

Despite the defeat, South Africa take the series 3-2 and will conclude their tour of Sri Lanka with a T20 International at the same venue on Tuesday.
