Trump’s tariffs undercut trade benefits for Africa under AGOA

Trade ministers from across Africa have been in Washington for the AGOA Forum. The African Growth and Opportunity Act has provided countries like South Africa with the opportunity to export products into the U.S. market tariff-free. But Trump’s new levies on steel and aluminium combined with the same threat on vehicles and auto parts, will undercut South Africa’s ability to benefit from the trade deal. While in Washington, South Africa’s Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies has been pushing for exemptions in meetings with top U.S. officials.
